Krása’s first surviving composition is a set of orchestral songs which formed his graduation work at the German academy. The work that established his reputation was the children’s opera Brundibar, which was later a beacon of light in the darkness of Terezin. In Terezin he wrote A Dance, Passacaglia and Fuga for string trio, Three Poems on Verses by Rimbaud, an Overture and a number of sketches. He also wrote a Symphony and a String Quartet which met with success in Paris. His works were performed in Paris, Zurich, Boston and Philadelphia.
Hans Krása was born in Prague to a musically talented family. By the time he was eleven, pieces by him had recieved public performances. He studied in the German Academy of Music in Prague with Alexander Zemlinsky and later worked with several artists in Prague. When he was deported to Terezin, he devoted himself completely to composition, but not all of his works from there survived. After rewriting his opera Brundibar by SS command to be used in a Nazi propaganda film, he outlived his usefulness for the Nazis and met his death in Auschwitz in the same day with Pavel Haas and Viktor Ullmann.
