Ana Seara was born in Coimbra in 1985. She started study ballet with only 3 years, enrolling later, in 1991, at the Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga. There she did the Grade 8 of the Royal Academy of Dance, and attended with distinction the unique Complementar Composition Course taught in Portugal, with Paulo Bastos. In this way, some of her works (including electronic works) were premiered. As a student of the Conservatório de Braga, she also participated in several hearings and concerts, as well as in piano pedagogy courses, being rewarded, for 4 consecutive years, the Regional Piano Competition held annually in Braga. In 2003 she successfully applied to the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML) to complete a Degree in Composition, graduating in 2007, with mark 19 (out of 20).
She studied with António Pinho Vargas, Christopher Bochmann, Carlos Caires, Luís Tinoco, João Madureira, Sérgio Azevedo, Carlos Fernandes, Roberto Perez, Jose Luis Ferreira, Vasco Pearce de Azevedo, Benoît Gibson Mendes and Nuno Bettencourt.
As a student of ESML, she organized projects like “Peças Frescas” — with the coordination of Luís Tinoco, in partnership with the S. Luiz Teatro Municipal (Lisbon), new composer’s concerts and co-organized and produced the III, IV and V EML Music Festival, also held in the S. Luiz Teatro Municipal. In September 2005, her work, Resson [ÂNSIAS] ... was presented in the International Festival Musica Viva. With her piece “Discursos” competed for the first edition of the International Composition Competition of Povoa de Varzim, getting an Honorable Mention in the category of chamber music and in 2007 won the 2nd prize in the “Music for Orchestra” of the 2nd edition of this same competition with “Perpétuité”. Although, in 2007, she composed “Opalescência” for oboe solo — a commission from the Young Musicians Prize, promoted by the Antena 2 — Portuguese Radio Broadcast — and “Três telas de Barcelona” — for ORCHESTRUTOPICA, premiered in the auditorium of Culturgest Lisboa. This last piece was performed once again by Orchestrutopica (invited by the composer António Pinho Vargas), in the event “Música Portuguesa, Hoje” (Portuguese Music, Today) at the Centro Cultural de Belem, in Lisbon in July 2008.
Ana Seara was recently awarded the 3rd international Composition Competition of the International Music Festival Povoa de Varzim, in the categories of chamber music, with the 2nd Prize of music and orchestra, with the 1st Prize, with her works “Poema, Menssagem” and “Le foncé le ciel de la Nuit Glacée” respectively. She has also participated in the II Reading Panel of Orquestra do Algarve with “Mudra” (2008). Subsequently this piece was selected for the season 08/09.
At the moment, she is working on her masters thesis in composition at the University of Évora under the guidance of Professor Christopher Bochmann and Professor Carlos Caires, as well as on the preparation of two works as a result of commissions made by the Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras and the Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa.
Ana Seara teaches in the Conservatório de Música de Cascais, and is a member of the production and programming of the Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras.
