His cantatas form the bulk of what has come downto us from Roemhildt’s oeuvre. There are about 200 of them, in addition we have a mass, a St. Matthew’s Passion and some works for organ.
His work has long been thought to be lost. Recently (1997), copies of his cantatas have been re-discovered. Now they are starting to be edited and are becoming subject to research. The cantatas are particularly interesting because they allow comparison to J.S. Bach’s works - Roemhildt lived quite close to him, and Bach is known to have sent him a disciple at least once. Moreover, Roemhildt also composed cantatas on texts by Erdmann Neumeister, as Bach did.
Born in Salzungen in 1684, died in Merseburg in 1756.
