Educated at Brisbane Grammar School. Entered Royal College of Music, London at 18. Joined infantry at outbreak of war in 1914, later transferring to air force. After the war, AB was a piano teacher at Sydney Conservatorium before returning to London in 1921. Joined the staff of RCM five years later. Greatly influenced by Latin American music, and composed several works with Latin American rhythms. Awarded the Cobbett Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 1956.
Studied composition with Stanford at RCM.
Was soloist in first performance of Lambert’s Piano Concerto (1931) with the composer conducting.
Piano pupils included Britten.
