The ensemble "die reihe" was founded in 1958 by Friedrich Cerha and Kurt Schwertsik in order to establish a permanent platform for modern music. As the "Wiener Schule" is so highly regarded, the ensemble’s programmes have included major twentieth century works of all styles for chamber orchestra.
"die reihe", which is mostly made up from members of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna, has become more and more specialised in first performances.
Furthermore, the orchestras’ repertoire offers a great variety of composers with various musical styles. This versatility creates a link between the pioneers of modern music and later twentieth century composers.
Apart from its concert engagements, radio and CD recordings, "die reihe" is regularly invited to perform at all leading festivals and institutions throughout Europe and the USA.
Heinz Karl Gruber has been a member of "die reihe", as a double bass player, since 1961. Since 1969 he has been a member of the newly named Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna.
Gruber’s work is characterised by the connection between his professional competence, his personal modesty and by his idea of amusement in art.
He follows his own conception of being a composer in today’s world, by also being a chansonier, actor, conductor and double bass player, as well as composer.
[biography in English:
Heinz Karl Gruber has been a member of "die reihe", as a double bass player, since 1961. From 1969 till 1998 he’s been a member of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna.
Composer of the celebrated ‘pandemonium’ Frankenstein!!, which has received hundreds of performances and broadcasts worldwide. Music refracts Viennese tradition, both classical and popular, through contemporary lens. His works draw on the cabaret style of the Weimar Republic, often combined with irreverent black humour. Much admired for string works including two violin concertos for Ernst Kovacic and a Cello Concerto for Yo-Yo Ma. Has appeared at many international festivals as featured composer, conductor, chansonnier, and music-theatre performer.
