Romantik und Moderne

concert
maandag, mei 9, 2022 - 19:30

Orpheus-Ensemble-Wien

Ernst KRENEK Streichtrio op. 118
Arnold SCHÖNBERG Sechs kleine Klavierstücke op. 19
Anton WEBERN Satz für Streichtrio
Antonín DVOŘÁK Klavierquartett Es-Dur op. 87

The Orpheus-Ensemble-Wien is a regular guest at the Arnold Schönberg Center and delights the audience with versatile programs in changing instrumentation. With Antonín Dvořák, one of Schönberg’s early models is heard this time, whose influence can hardly be discerned in the expressionistic Six Little Piano Pieces, op. 19. Even shorter than Schönberg’s opus is Anton Webern’s movement for string trio, an expressive testimony on the way to the twelve-tone method. Ernst Krenek’s five-movement trio was composed about 25 years later, and explores the twelve-
tone idiom based on classical formal thinking.

dinsdag, mei 17, 2022 - 19:30

Niklas Sivelöv, piano

Johann Sebastian BACH Partita Nr. 2 c-Moll BWV 826
Anders ELIASSON Disegno No 1
Arnold SCHÖNBERG Suite für Klavier op. 25
Alexander SKRJABIN Zwei Stücke op. 57; Albumblatt op. 58; Zwei Stücke op. 59; Zwei Gedichte op. 69; Zwei Tänze op. 73
Niklas SIVELÖV aus 24 Preludes for piano

Swedish pianist Niklas Sivelöv makes his debut at the Arnold Schönberg Center with an exceptionally varied concert evening. In addition to preludes from his own pen and a piece by his compatriot Anders Eliasson, works by Alexander Scriabin, whose work was also important for Viennese modernism, will be heard. The programmatic combination of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita and Arnold Schönberg’s Suite for Piano promises exciting musical experiences – works that artistically reinvent Baroque dance movements in the sound of their time.

For the 90th birthday of Eugene Hartzell

For the 90th birthday of Eugene Hartzell

concert
donderdag, mei 19, 2022 - 19:30

Stefan Neubauer, clarinet
Johannes Piirto, piano

Alban BERG Vier Stücke op. 5
René STAAR Brief Definition – Memorial for Eugene Hartzell (WP)
Eugene HARTZELL from Nine Uncritical Pieces for Piano; Sonata for Clarinet and Piano
Johannes BRAHMS Sonate Es-Dur op. 120/2
Hans Erich APOSTEL Sonatine für Klarinette op. 19/2

Arnold Schönberg’s twelve-tone method continued to develop in music after the Second World War almost independently of its inventor. Few composers remained faithful to the convictions of the master of the Viennese School – among them Hans Erich Apostel and his pupil Eugene Hartzell (* May 21, 1932, † April 20, 2000). The combination of their clarinet works with a classic by Johannes Brahms shows how closely the dodecaphony is connected with the musical thinking of the late 19th century.
