Karl Ernst Naumann was the grandson of Johann Gottlieb Naumann. He studied the organ with Johann Schneider, and composition with Moritz Hauptmann.
From 1860 he was organist and musik-director in Jena, and from 1877 he was a professor there. He published an excellent treatise, “Über die verschiedenen Bestimmungen der Tonverhältnisse” (published in Leipzig, 1858).
