Margarita Ivanovna Kuss was born in Ryazan on October 13, 1921. From early childhood she had lived in Moscow. Her father, Johannes (Ivan) Petrovich Kuss (Kuus), was from a German-Estonian family. As a German he was exiled from Moscow in pre-war years and subsequently rehabilitated in the middle of the 1950’s. Her mother, Mariya Fedorovna Kuss, a daughter of an Orthodox priest, was a teacher of music.
In 1943 Margarita became a student of the Moscow State Conservatory where she studied composition with Professor V.Y. Shebalin and instrumentation with D.D. Shostakovich. She graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory in 1948.
In 1949 Margarita became a member of the Union of Composers.
In 1991 she was awarded the title “Honoured Art Worker of the RSFSR”.
Margarita continued to work hard during the last years of her life. She set herself fully to music.
Margarita Kuss died at home in Moscow on December 19th, 2009.
