The German composer and conductor Leo Blech studied piano with Ernst Rudorff in Berlin, and composition with Woldemar Bargiel and Engelbert Humperdinck. He conducted at the Stadttheater in Aachen (1893–1899), and in the German Theatre in Prague (1899–1906). In 1906 he became conductor at the Berlin Hofoper. He was then employed at the Deutsche Opernhaus (1923), Berlin Volsoper (1924) and the Vienna Volksoper (1925). Blech returned to Berlin in 1926 at the Staatsoper.
In 1937 he was unable to return to Germany after a guest engagement in Riga, because he was Jewish. He to flee to Stockholm in 1941, and could only return to Berlin in 1949, where he became conductor at the Städtische Oper.
His own operas were quite successful. Notably his Das war Ich (1902), Alpenkönig und Menschenfeind (1903), and especially Versiegelt (1908). He also composed songs, chamber work, orchestral work, and choral pieces.
