The French composer Charles-Simon Catel is also know because of a Tretise in Harmony that he wrote in 1802. It was translated into several other languages. As a composer he wrote music for (military) band, music for the French Revolution, as well as operas, symphonic and vocal works.
At 11 years old he went to Pris to study composition with Gossec and piano with Gobert. During the French Revolution he joined the band of the Garde Nationale de Paris, for which he also wrote music. He then became a teacher of solfège and harmony, and a répétiteur at the Opéra in Paris. After 1802 he also started writing stage works.
