Hans von Bronsart
David C.F. Wright DMus
Hans von Bronsart, also known as Hans Bronsart von Schellendorf, was born in Germanic Prussia of a military background on 11 February 1830 and studied at Berlin University. He studied the piano with Adolph Jollack and became a phenomenal pianist.
He moved to Weimar in 1853, and developed a deep friendship with Liszt and, in fact, premiered his Piano Concerto no 2 with the composer conducting. Bronsart was also friendly with Berlioz and Brahms but it was his several years training with Liszt that enabled him to be a competent conductor of orchestras in Berlin and Leipzig.
In Weimar in 1861, he married for the second time. His new bride was Ingeborg Lena Starck who was also a composer. She was born on 24 August 1840 in St Petersburg of Swedish parents and died on 17 June 1913, about four months before her husband.
She wrote four operas, a piano concerto, piano music, chamber music songs and choral music.
From 1867 to 1887 Hans von Bronsart was the manager of Hanover’s Theatre Royal, followed by a similar position in Weimar until his retirement in 1895.
He died in Munich on 3 November 1913.
A lot of his music is lost, including his two symphonies.
His Piano Concerto in F sharp minor Op 10 of 1873 and dedicated to his wife was described by Hans von Bülow as the finest Weimar concerto. Bülow also referred to the Symphonic Poem Frűhlings Fantasie Op 11 as very beautiful.
The concerto is in three movements: Allegro maestoso, Adagio ma non troppo (often very beautiful) and a sparkling Allegro con fuoco.
The Piano Trio in G minor Op 1 of 1877, is dedicated to Bulow. Opus 2 is two books of piano pieces, four pieces in each book, entitled Nachklange aus der Jugentzeit dedicated to Fraulien Marie Rohrs. The following year there appeared Three mazurkas for piano. His virtuosic Fantasie for piano Op 6, dedicated to Ingeborg, is a fine work.
He composed an opera Der Corsar, a Sextet and other items most of which are lost.
His music is certainly worth investigating.
