Willy Burkhard
David C.F. Wright DMus
Willy Burkhard enjoyed acclaim in his native Switzerland in his short life. He was born in Evilard in the canton Of Berne on 17 April 1900 and died in Zurich on 18 June 1955. He Undertook teacher training and graduated from Muristalden. He studied with E. Graf in Berne and with Karg-Elert (1877–1933) and Robert Teichmuller (1863–1939) in Leipzig in the early 1920s and his early tutelage shows a sense of traditionalism which remains in his work throughout most of his life. Then he moved on to Munich to study with Walter Courvoisier and on to Paris to study with Max d’Ollone.
While he continued with many studies in aspects of music in 1924 he studied composition at Berne and was appointed to the Conservatory there in 1928. He conducted choirs and small orchestras.
His health was always a problem and he suffered a severe attack of tuberculosis in 1932. From 1933 and for a few years following, he spent time in Montana and Davos for health reasons but settled in Zurich in 1942 where he taught music theory. The love and kindness shown to him by Christians in his illness drew him to this faith which was a great comfort to him from 1932 until his death. Understandably, he wrote many sacred works. He suffered severe ill health for the last 23 years of his life
All his works are of high quality and his choral works have earned him a deserved reputation. He was a prolific composer writing about an hundred works. He was a very original composer of operas, incidental music, oratorios, cantatas, sonatas, suites, serenades, orchestral works, chamber music and much else.
Putting aside for a moment his choral and vocal works, he composed two violin concertos Op 7 of 1925 and Op 69 of 1943, two symphonies Op 21 of 1926-8 and Op 73 of 1944, a concerto for strings Op 50 of 1939, a cello concerto Op 64 of 1940, an organ concerto Op 74 of 1945, a konzertstuck for organ and orchestra Op 75 of 1945, a viola concerto op 93 of 1954.
There is a fine piano sonata Op 66 of 1943 and the String Quartet no 2 Op 68 of 1943.
His work is cleverly contrapuntal and linear with strong hints of the baroque style. It is often serious and taut and he sometimes majors on bitonality. His oratorio Der Gesicht Jesajas which occupied 1933 to 1935 is a fine work in which bitonality is used with triads that are not related. This also applies to his cantata Herbst of 1935 and his next cantata Blätterfall of 1937. The sobriety is lessened in the cantata Das Ewige Brausen of 1937 and the music has more colour and variety.
Das Jahr is an oratorio of 1942 and probably inspired by the composer’s love of nature and may be based on the seasons. The lessening of bitonality gives way to traditional tonality. It shows the Germanic influence but his usage of vocal line shows his marvellous understanding of voices.
The Mass Op 85 for a cappella choir is a serious but effective piece.
In the last year of his life he composed the Cantata The Flood recounting the story of Noah.
There are few recordings of this neglected composer and it is hoped that this serious omission’s may soon be rectified. However, his music is very serious and may not appeal to everyone.
