Tim Gorman is an award-winning music producer, arranger, composer, keyboardist, and vocalist. In thirty years in the Music and Film Industry, Tim has worked with major artists including The Who, The Rolling Stones, Duane Eddy, John Hiatt and is a successful solo artist. Film scoring credits include James Cameron’s “Titanic,” and Columbia Pictures “No Small Affair.” Gaming Industry contributing works include Electronic Arts, The Sims, and Spore.
CAREER
Tim Gorman’s remarkable career began in the Pacific Northwest as a session musician at Recording Associates in Portland and Kaye-Smith Studios in Seattle. At Kaye-Smith he worked with producer/engineers Jim Gaines, Buzz Richmond and the legendary R&B producer songwriter Thom Bell. There, Tim recorded sessions on The Spinners “8” for Atlantic Records, and accompanied Elton John on “The Thom Bell Sessions” for MCA Records.
While at Kaye-Smith, Tim collaborated with songwriter Bill Lamb and was introduced to iconic British producer Glyn Johns, who soon gave him his first production and recording contract. This break catapulted Tim’s career into the heart of the rock music industry where he would go on to make significant contributions in both recording and live performance.
While working for Johns’ production company “Turn Up Down Music,” Tim worked with rock legends like The Who, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, John Entwistle, Lazy Racer, Local Boys, Dusty Springfield, Tim Renwick, Diane Tell, and producer David MacKay.
In 1978 Tim performed overdubs on the piano, synthesizer, and Hammond B3 organ on the Rolling Stones tracks “Emotional Rescue” and “Tattoo You.”
Extensive work with The Who includes:
-Recorded with The Who in 1982 on the band’s 10th studio album “It’s Hard” and performed on the accompanying tour “The Who Across America.” It was on this tour, at Shea Stadium, that Tim was awarded his first two RIAA certified gold records.
-At his home studio, Tim and Pete Townshend recorded the now-legendary keyboard introduction to “Eminence Front,” used by countless athletes, sports organizations, television shows and movies.
-The Who’s 1983 album “Who’s Last” also features Tim on the piano and synthesizer.
-In 1986 Tim collaborated with renowned Who bassist John Entwistle to record “The Rock” and toured with the album throughout 1988-89. Griffin Music released “The Rock” in 1996.
-In 2006 Tim reunited with The Who to record “Live From Toronto” for MCA Records.
A true “Musician’s Musician,” Tim’s composition and production background and mastery of piano, organ, synthesizer and the latest software sets him apart from his peers. His natural musical talent and varied skill set have enabled him to rise to high levels in many different genres of music. Tim has recorded and performed with a diverse list of legendary artists, from Celtic master fiddler Alasdair Fraser, to psychedelic overlords The Jefferson Airplane/Starship. Other collaborators include guitar giant Duane Eddy, the trailblazing Hellecasters, Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, Emmy Lou Harris, Charlie Daniels, John Hiatt, jazz saxophonist Steve Douglas, Paul Kennerly, Journey, The Smithereens, Hawaiian slack key guitar virtuoso Kapono Beamer, Paul Kantner, Greg Kihn. This list continues to grow.
COMPOSER and RECORDING ARTIST
Tim’s personal career as a recording artist and composer began in 1979 when he was awarded a recording contract with A&M Records through Glyn Johns and his partner, entertainment attorney Eric Kronfeld. Dubbing themselves “Lazy Racer,” he and a select group of musicians released the self-titled album “Lazy Racer” and the 1980 follow up “Lazy Racer- Formula 2.” The albums were well received by music critics in both the U.K. and the U.S.
In 1996 Tim released his first solo record, “Classical Daydreams” on Gallery Records. A return to decades of classical music study, it features 10 quintessential selections from classical masters; Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Delibes, Dvorak, Massenet, Pachelbel, Rachmaninoff, and Satie. The selections display Tim’s extraordinary orchestration talents and continue to receive generous reviews. “Classical Daydreams” was the first recording done at Tim’s “Timtone Media Studios” and marked his debut as both producer and engineer.
In 2004 Tim released his second solo offering, “Celtic Loop” on Timtone Records with credit as composer, producer, and engineer. Inspiration for “Celtic Loop” came from his ancestry and childhood home, where Irish reels and traditional Celtic music were commonplace. Further inspiration came from touring with master Celtic fiddler Alasdair Fraser in the Scottish Highlands.
“Celtic Loop” is a distinctly unique project featuring an unusual approach to production and recording. It’s original, meticulously crafted audio loops and samples were created by Tim using state-of-the-art recording and editing software. The recording was brought to life by overdubbing authentic Celtic instruments and musicians, captured by senior mixing engineer Stephen Hart at Fantasy Studios.
In 2011 Tim released his third solo album on Timtone Records, “Cowboy.” Again, acting as composer, producer and engineer, “Cowboy” is a collection of acoustic piano performances deeply rooted in traditional Country and Americana. His limitless breadth of composition is well-expressed on this album, which also includes two interpretations by modern American composers; “Last Date” by Floyd Kramer and “Sweet Baby James” by James Taylor.
The opening cut, “Ashokan Farewell” by Jay Ungar was recently made popular in the Ken Burns documentary “The Civil War.” Recorded live at Skywalker Sound with no edits, punch-ins or overdubs, Tim was able to capture every detail and nuance true to the performance, a demanding process with unique results. Pleasing Audiophiles everywhere, “Cowboy” was recorded “direct to digital,” bypassing the studio console to go straight to high definition recorders, rendering a flawless presentation. The outstanding performance is delivered to the listener with help from final product; a high-resolution 96K DVD audio disc in addition to the standard audio CD.
GAMING and MULTIMEDIA
Tim’s orchestration talents took him to the French National Theatre as Music Director for Sony/France in 1991. Later, Tim worked under composer James Horner on James Cameron’s “Titanic” and Columbia Pictures “No Small Affair.”
Another unique project for the film industry was the sound restoration of 284 Popeye cartoons for Paramount Pictures. This required hand-writing each song from the original soundtrack and then re-playing, recording and mixing them at his studio.
Tim has expanded his repertoire to the gaming industry, collaborating with other professionals to design and craft the music for “ Sims 2,” “Sims 3,” and “Spore” for Electronic Arts.
