Composer Judith Cloud’s gift for vocal writing originates out of her own rich experiences as an accomplished mezzo–soprano soloist. Performing throughout the United States, Cloud premiered many new works by young composers as well as her own music, including acclaimed performances at the Aspen Music Festival, with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony, the Jacksonville Symphony, the Sedona Chamber Music Festival, the Flagstaff Festival of the Arts Orchestra and the Rome Festival Orchestra. Highlights of her performing career include a performance of the Brahms Neueliebeslieder Waltzer with the acclaimed radio program Saint Paul Sunday Morning, as well as being the soloist for the American premier performance of Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with the Winston-Salem Symphony. She still remains active as a recitalist and soloist, and will perform the mezzo solos in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Flagstaff Symphony in the spring of 2009.
Cloud first began composing for the voice in 1974, and her vast catalogue of vocal works attests to her growing reputation as a “singer-friendly” composer. Her growing oeuvre also features many choral pieces, as well as works in a wide range of other genres, including a concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra; the woodwind quintet Six Stories by Italian Children; and a work for soprano saxophone, trumpet and horn entitled Variations on an Old Negro Spiritual. Other songs include The Secret History of Water, fourteen settings of poems by Cuban-American Silvia Curbelo and Awake On A Spring Night, five songs to poems by Betty Andrews Recent choral compositions include Philosophia Perennis for men’s chorus, mezzo soprano, flugelhorn and piano, and Long, Long Ago, a Christmas setting for a cappella chorus. Her chamber work for soprano, clarinet and piano Three Betty Andrews Songs, was one of the highlights of the 2006 International Alliance for Women in Music International Conference in Miami, Florida.
Cloud has been an honored composer in residence with the noted “Escape to Create” program sponsored by the Seaside Institute in Seaside, FL for two seasons. Recordings include her cantata Feet of Jesus, for soprano and baritone soloists, soprano saxophone, chorus and organ, with the BIS label on a CD entitled “Spirituals,” released in 1997 by the Saint Jacob’s Chamber Choir and directed by Gary Graden. Slated for release in late 2008 with Centaur is “(In)habitation: Settings of Margaret Atwood Poetry by American Women Composers”, by the Strempel-Beaudette duo, with her cycle Night Dreams included with works by some of the top female composers of our time, including Libby Larsen, Lori Laitman, Amanda Harberg, Elisenda Fábregas, and Tania León. The recently released Clarion recording “First Day,” by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Linda Mack, conductor includes Words From An Artist’s Palette and Spell Against Sorrow.
Recent performances of the prolific composer’s music include Três Canções, a new set of songs with texts by three 20th century Brazilian poets composed for Brazilian tenor Ricardo Pereira and pianist Rita Borden. Lullaby for the Earth, a song for two tenors, two baritones and piano, set to poetry by Perry Brass, was composed and performed in celebration of Earth Day, 2007.
Cloud’s song cycle Night Dreams, a riveting setting of Margaret Atwood poems was commissioned by soprano Eileen Strempel and pianist Sylvie Beaudette, and performed as part of the Great Music Series at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Manhattan in May of 2007. Spell Against Sorrow, for women’s a cappella choir received its first performance in London by Psallite, under the direction of baroque flutist and scholar, Nancy Hadden. Words from an Artist’s Palette, Cloud’s most recent commission for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale men’s choir, received its premiere on July 13, 2007. Songs of Need and Desire for soprano and guitar was premiered in July of 2007, as well, by soprano Eileen Strempel and guitarist Kenneth Meyer with a repeat performance at the Chautauqua Institute in August of 2008. Three Impressions of Northern Arizona, for flute and piano was premiered in China in September of 2007 by flutist Emily MacKay and pianist Rita Borden. Soprano Meghann Vaughn and pianist Arlene Shrut performed the premiere of the song set, Four Pablo Neruda Sonnets, in February of 2008. Six Forays for flute and clarinet, commissioned by Emily McKay and Jeremy Reynolds, received its first performance in January of 2008 and was featured at the Great Southwest Flute Fest in April. Cloud’s most recent premier was of the song set Quatre melodies de Ronsard composed in honor of noted scholar, Carol Kimball, on the occasion of her retirement. Baritone Tod Fitpatrick and pianist Robert Mills performed the piece on March 29, 2007 at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. Her woodwind quintet Six Stories by Italian Children was a featured work performed by Kokopelli Wind Quintet at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Provo, Utah in July of 2008. Three Spells for Women’s Chorus a cappella with baroque flute will be performed by Psallite at the Women in Music Conference in London on November 8, 2008.
Current projects include songs to poetry by Kathleen Raine and a second set of Pablo Neruda Sonnets, as well as a work for chorus and guitar, commissioned by conductor Robert Cowles and The Hobart and William Smith Colleges vocal ensemble Cantori.
Dr. Cloud received vocal performance degrees from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and Florida State University. Her first composition lessons were with Robert Ward, who advised her to keep singing—but to keep writing music, too. She has been a member of the music faculty for The North Carolina School of the Arts, Florida Community College at Jacksonville, and Indiana State University. She is currently Coordinator of Voice at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, where she teaches studio voice and vocal pedagogy. Inspiring students with her teaching as well as her compositional talents, she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” for the College of Fine Arts in 2004.
The Composer is a member in good standing with ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.)
