Federico Miyara
Born in 1958 in Rosario, Argentina, to an engineer (José Miyara) and a teacher (Julia Verdeja), at the age of seven he took piano lessons for a brief period of time. Without a piano available at home, his interest faded away and he abandoned his musical studies until the age of nineteen, when after the acquisition of a piano he started with renewed enthusiasm to learn piano and composition on his own. He was already studying Electronics Engineering at the Rosario National University. After graduating, and while he was starting to teach mathematics and electronics at his University, he decided to improve his musical skills by studying piano with Alicia Correas and composition with Dante Grela. He also took chamber music lessons from Ricardo Vidal. While his earliest compositions date back to 1977, it was not until 1985 that his music started to be premiered. His first performer was his piano teacher, Alicia Correas, who premiered his Piano Sonata No. 3, composed in 1980. At the same time, he had been invited to take part of a group of young composers that was emerging that year, called Klank - Música Contemporánea de Rosario, which would undertake the organization of several concerts where its members presented their works. The group disbanded at the end of 1987 due to economic limitations and the impossibility to get any further official help, but during its brief existence he managed to premiere seven works, including chamber music and a choir work. From then on he continued presenting his works with the duo he formed with flutist María Victoria Gómez, to whom he would eventually marry. From this fruitful cooperation with his wife he composed (as of 2022) 17 works for solo flute or chamber groups including the flute. Starting in 1991 his academic interests where oriented to acoustics and community noise. He started to teach graduate courses on acoustics, noise control psychoacoustics. His interest on those subjects arised from the attempt to understand the physical foundations of music. Shorttly after he began to do research on those subjects, which he continues to this date. For more than ten years he organized concerts with works by composers from Rosario sponsored by the Municipality of Rosario. The Ensamble Rosario, a chamber group specialized in contemporary music has commisioned him to write several works. From 2008 through 2016 he was a member, as basso continuo, of the Agrupación Instrumentalia, a chamber group devoted to barroque and classical music. In 2018 the Rosario Provincial Symphony Orchestra commisioned him a symphonic work which was called Sinfonietta de los mártires (Martyr’s Sinfonietta, which was premiered in September 2019). After having given many recitals including his own works along with works from other composers, he found more and more difficult to perform written music in public and turned to free improvisation, which he had been practising at home from the beginning of his musical career. He gave several improvisation recitals, either as piano soloist or in groups ranging from duos to large groups including percussion and other string and wind instruments as well as computer sounds and live-processed singing.
