Born in Romania on July 20, 1940 Dan Voiculescu studied at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca (1958–64), where he achieved his Diploma in Composition (under Sigismund Todutza) and in Piano (under Magda Kardos). He attended classes with V. Mortari (Venice, 1968) and K. Stockhausen (Cologne, 1971–72), and at Darmstädter Kurse für Neue Musik (1972, 1978). He received his Doctor in Musicology degree in 1983 at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy. He has been Professor of Counterpoint, Fugue and Composition at the Academy of Music in Cluj (1963–2000).
Currently he is Professor of Stylistics and Contemporary Languages at the National University of Music in Bucharest (since 2000). He is member of the Society of Romanian Composers (since 1965). He was editor of the Works of Musicology published by the Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca (1979–91), and President of the Todutza Fundation from Cluj (1995–2000).
