President’s Frontier Award for Michael Hersch

Composer and pianist Michael Hersch has won the 2017 President’s Frontier Award of the John Hopkins University. The prize was first awarded in 2015. Hersch will receive $250,000 as a funding for five years for his research expenses.

Michael Hersch is a composer at the Peabody Institute. He has built a significant international reputation. Major orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists around the world have commissioned and performed his works. He is known for challenging listeners and performers with works of great complexity, audacity, and empathy, and has received many notable composition awards, including the Berlin and Rome Prizes, and accolades of music critics and audiences.
