  • Ferdinand Ries Don't stop at the concertos .
    9 jaar 9 maanden geleden

I bought the complete CPO symphonies when I saw them at too good a price to pass up, and I played them, one after another, into the small hours. I've not done that with any composer before.

Ries's compulsive magpie-ing and immitation can be annoying at times in the early symphonies, but he largely grows out of it in his later work and even in the early ones, the "magpie" does interesting things with what he's picks up!

So I looked for more of his stuff and bought the Naxos concertos. This time, I played them one CD a time, but enjoyed them. The best are even better than the symphonies (although others are perhaps not as good).

I've heard there's another CD expected in the Naxos series? I'm looking forward to it!

I am cousin to phillip cannon. Both my father and uncle served in france during ww1, where my uncle met his french to be wife [phillip's parents]. I met them once , in their twilight years, in cornwall. Phillip's mother was a lovely, lovely french lady.

Sadly, i have heard very little of his music, but will try to remedy this.

the trombone is NOT a simpler instrument . Do you have any idea how hard it is to get the slide into the right position to get the right note? It doesn't have specific keys or strings like a piano or guitar. Holst was pretty brilliant if you ask me. The Planets is incredible and it's amazing that he kept going even with his medical problems.

  • Frank Stiles Jane Hayes ( Robinson )

Delighted to find news of Frank and his well deserved success and public acclaim. He was my violin teacher for seven years, from 1960 - 1967 and under his guidance and teaching I experienced the challenges of music exams, festivals and concerts, Ealing Youth Orchestra and the very beginnings of the Priory Concertante. At last I have found a wayof contacting him by email and look forward to discovering where and when his compositions will be performed. It's at least twenty five years since I last saw him, in London at a musical evening with the Myerscough brothers and when his wife Elizabeth was still alive. He has never been forgotten because I owe so much to him; my love of music, of the violin and viola, and a passion for Bach are the result of the time and patience he invested in me. What a wonderful man!

I immediately felt that it was taken from the magnificant seven theme, until i compared the dates. it seems elmer got his inspiration from Mr Moncayo's Haupango written 19 years earlier. Without any info from me, (i replayed on TIVO) my wife popped out with "reminds me of the mag seven.

born 1940, Bill Haley, Rock around the clock, etc. Disney's Fantasia got me started on classical, romantic, etc. It took me 2 years to be able to like the first two movements of the sixth symphony. I love alot of music by all the greats, but Beethoven is by far my favorite. I have literally all of his recorded music, alot several times over (records, 8 track, cassettes, CD's)

  • George Butterworth George Butterworth
    9 jaar 9 maanden geleden

I have tried to e-mail you, but without success. I hope the following helps.

The only orchestral pieces apart from The Banks of Green Willow and Rhapsody: A Shropshire Lad are the Two English Idylls - there are recordings of which I'd recommend Boult on Lyrita (Boult was a friend of Butterworth's). The song-cycles Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad, and Bredon Hill and Other Songs are very important (you'll recognise themes from two of the songs that appear in the orchestral rhapsody. There are many recordings of these. All his other songs have been recorded - a recent disc by Mark Stone also includes a short film of Butterworth morris dancing! There is a song-cycle, Love Blows as the Wind Blows, which exists in three forms - voice and string quartet (the original), voice and piano, and voice and orchestra. All three have been recorded. Butterworth's remaining works have (scandalously) not yet been recorded. They are: Suite for String Quartet, In the Highlands for female voices and piano, and two folksong arrangements for chorus.

All the music is available as study scores from musikmph.de - ironic isn't it that we have to wait for a German firm to publish it all.

Butterworth probably destroyed anything else before he went to France in 1915. Incidentally, we owe Butterworth thanks for rescuing Vaughan Williams' London Symphony after the only score was lost. He and friends wrote out a new one from the parts - VW in return dedicated the work to him.

  • Franz Schubert About the Depth of Schubert’s
    9 jaar 9 maanden geleden

I think that the tunefulness of Schubert’s music is considered both his strength and weakness. On the one hand, distinct melodic line makes his music more accessible to listeners and more popular. On the other hand, tuneful Schubert’s music was criticized as “easy and without depth”. To these critics, depth is attributed only to the “difficult music” that is highly abstract in contents and complicated in structure. In fact, this standard of appreciation is accepted by mainstream western thought in general; the “abstract and complicated” is the result of evolution and progress from the “concrete and simple”.
Schubert did not compose highly abstract music like Bach’s “Kunst der Fuge”, at all. The first movement of his last string quartet sounds exceptionally abstract, but even this work is full of pure Schubertian characteristics. Such complicated structure as Beethoven’s sonata form (especially development section) is basically foreign to his music. On the contrary, Schubert embroidered his works with “concrete tunes” from early to late works and expanded his music with comparatively simple structure based on repetition.

  • Franz Schubert About the Depth of Schubert’s
    9 jaar 9 maanden geleden

In the East, there is strong tendency to take dim view of the abstract and complicated. These two are thought of as work of “dividing intellect”, which functions by separating the subject from the object in the first place. But, Easterners regarded this dividing intellect as a serious hindrance to “enlightenment”. One can reach the state of enlightenment by seeing the world as it is and freeing oneself from any attachment to the object. This traditional thought had much influence on Easterners’ aesthetic attitude; importance is attached to the depth concealed in things ordinary, easy and simple. This kind of depth must be very paradoxical from the standpoint of western thought.
Schubert’s music could be re-appraised when critics and listeners started to discern the profound depth beneath easy-to-access melodic surface. This depth has innocent, inward and emotional nature above all and is reached spontaneously through intuition. It is like feeling of wonder that child with pure heart had when seeing the world for the first time. It cannot be expressed with human language and grasped with abstract and conceptual means, either. I think Schubert set great example by proving that depth can be also appreciated in “concrete and simple” music.

I have been playing this Toccata and Fugue for nearly 50 years now, having heard it played at a lecture/recital in Portsmouth Guildhall in the early 60's. I have played it and loved it ever since but I'm not too certain that it can be regarded so highly. I have never heard, or heard of, anyone else playing it so I am going to give it an airing on the 26th September 2010 on the powerful Hero's Organ in the fortress of Kufstein. Most of the Austrian Tyrol and even parts of Bavaria will thus hear it. Google Kufstein if you don't know anything about this weird and wonderful organ.

  • Julius Conus Conus
    9 jaar 9 maanden geleden

I'm confused by the entry that Conus was murdered, dying of starvation following Russian revolution (1917).

I've read that Conus died in Moscow in 1942, about 15 years after the revolution. Following the revolution, it appears that he did leave Moscow, living in both Paris and New York, before returning to Moscow in the 1930s. Apparently his son married Rachmaninov's daughter during the 30s and the two composers were both friends as well as in-laws.

Is it the case that Conus died of starvation during the war, following the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union?
