Composer reference:

Wolgang Rihm has won the 2015 Grawemeyer Award for Music Competition. The University of Louisville awarded him the prize for his 15-minute orchestral piece which he wrote to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Philharmonic’s concert hall. The composer will receive $100,000.

The composition which won him the prize is called “IN-SCHRIFT 2” and makes imaginative use of the space of the concert hall, which was one of the first halls where the audience is seated all around the stage. It was written as a commission for the concert hall, and was performed at the anniversary celebration concert in October 2013.
