Ambrosian chant (older than Gregorian) practised from 4th until 20th century in all churches. Music flourished under Sforza rule 1450-1535. 
Josquin Desprez 1459-79.
Spanish rule until 1708. Archbishop Carlo Borromeo was an ardent supporter of music reforms by the Trent Council (ca. 1560). Gian Paolo Cima early 17th century.
1708-97 + 1815-70 Austrian rule. Leading musician Sammartini, teached Gluck 1737-41. also J. Christian Bach. The Austrian minister Firmian supported Mozart (four visits 1770-73, operas Mitridate, Ascanio, Lucio Silla). From 1808 Casa Ricordi the leading publishing company of Italy.
