The Praemium Imperiale 2012 for music, an international arts prize patronized by Japan’s ruling dynasty, was awarded to Philip Glass. The prize is worth 15 million yen (about $192,600).

This year's other winners of the prize are Cai Guo-Qiang (Painting, China), Cecco Bonanotte (Sculpture, Italy), Henning Larsen (Architecture, Denmark), and Yoko Morishita (Theatre/Film, Japan).

The artists are recognized and awarded for their achievements, for the impact they have had internationally on the arts, and for their role in enriching the global community. Apart from the money they will also receive a diploma and a medal, which will be presented by honorary patron of the Japan Art Association Prince Hitachi in an awards ceremony to be held in Tokyo on October 23.
