Michael Colina is a multiple GRAMMY® winning composer and producer based in New York. Colina’s compositional voice is the result of a unique confluence of styles, embracing classical, jazz and Latin influences.
Colina’s youth was spent traveling between the US and Cuba, exposing the young musician to the sounds of Latin music as well as soul and gospel from America’s south. He also immersed himself in classical music, studying composition at the North Carlonia School for Arts with Vittorio Giannini, Louis Mennini and Robert Ward. He continued studies at the Chigiana in Siena, Italy and was the first recipient of the Vittorio Giannini Memorial Scholarship Award.
A world apart from his classical training, Colina has made a name for himself as producer and engineer on recordings for legendary musicians, including Bob James, David Sanborn, Michael Becker, Marcus Miller, Bill Evans and Michael Franks; he has also worked alongside George Benson, Earl Klugh, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. Over the past three decades, Colina has written music for television, film, theatre, dance and live performances on concert stages throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. As a jazz musician, composer, producer and engineer, he has won three Gold Records, three GRAMMYS® in the field of Contemporary Jazz, and won an Ace Award for Best Film Score.
During a 1999 trip to Cuba with his father, Colina’s love for the rhythms of his Cuban childhood reawakened, and the echoes of these early experiences are evident in his most recent works, such as Mambosa, intimately integrating his Cuban roots with the classical tradition. “It’s a very personal blend of music,” Colina explains, “I write what I want to hear.”
