2003

They Once Were (c. 12’). A Concert Overture for Symphony Orchestra. Commissioned by Birmingham Conservatoire, University of Central England, as winner of the New Millennium Composition Competition 2002 and first performed by the Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lionel Friend on 26 March 2004.

1997/8

Lamentations and Celebrations (c. 30’). Concerto for Percussion Ensemble and Orchestra. The first section of the Percussion Concerto Lamentations and Celebrations won first prize in the Fourth International Composition Competition 2 Agosto in summer 1998. It was the first time the International Jury had unanimously awarded the gold medal prize, and the first time it had ever been awarded to a foreign composer. The performance took place in the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, and was broadcast throughout Italy on radio and TV. The complete work awaits its premiere.

1994/9

Wave Etchings (c. 27’). Concerto in three movements for Piano and Orchestra Originally devised as a work for Piano and Tape, the first section of Wave Etchings was premiered by Philip Mead and Stephen Montague at the Michael Tippett Centre, Bath, in December 1994. Completely recast as a full-scale piano concerto, Wave Etchings was awarded the first prize in the Seventh Edition of the City of Tarragona International Award for Musical Compositions. Premiered in 2000 by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra cond. Antoni Ros Marb Albert Attenelle (piano). UK premiere 2001 BBC Symphony Orchestra, cond. Pascal Rophe, Rolf Hind (piano). Subsequently broadcast on BBC R3 Hear and Now

Dances and Dirges (c. 21’). 2 Fl (+Picc), 2 Cl (+2 Bcl), Hn, Perc, 2 Pf, 2 Vn, Vla, Vc, Cb (or optional Bass gtr.) Workshop performance as part of the University of Manchester Department of Music Autumn Series on 28 November 2002 by an ensemble conducted by Gavin Wayte.

1999

Fanfare from the back of beyond (c. 3’) Fl (+Picc), Ob, Fag, Horn, Bass Tbne, Hp, Vla, Cb Written in response to the BBC’s call for pieces as part of the State of the Nation 2000 series, Fanfare was recorded by the London Sinfonietta for BBC 3 Here and Now with live performances at the Purcell Room.

1991

Te Rerioa (c. 10’) Fl (+Picc), Cl (+Bcl), Perc, Pf, Vn, Vc First given a workshop performance by the Ixion Ensemble at Dartington in August 1991. Subsequently chosen for the SPNM’s 50th Anniversary Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in March 1993. Performed by Jane’s Minstrels and recorded and broadcast by the BBC.

Three Fragments for Soprano and Microtonal Ensemble (c. 22’). Fl (+Picc), Ob, Cl (+Bcl), Hn, Tpt, Tbne, Bass Tbne, 2 Perc, Pf, 2Vn, Vla, Vc, Cb Written for Sarah Stowe and the Guildhall New Music Ensemble who gave the first performance at the SPNM Microtonal Forum in 1991, cond. James Wood.

1990

Three Small Litanies for Soprano and Chamber Ensemble (c. 12’). Sop, Fl (+picc), Bbcl (+Bcl), Vn, Vc, Pf, Cond. First performed by Gemini with Mary Wiegold (sop), Martyn Brabbins (cond). Chosen to conclude the SPNM Regional Day in Exeter, February 1991. Recorded and broadcast by the BBC, Three Small Litanies received a commemorative award from the Second Tokyo International Competition for Chamber Music Composition.

1989

Concerto for Ten Players and Conductor (c. 24’). Fl, Ob, Cl (+Bcl), Fag, 2 Perc, Pf, Vn, Vla, Vc, Cond. Written for the Cleveland Institute of Music Chamber Ensemble who gave the premiere of the first two movements in March 1989. The London premiere of the completed work was given by Music Projects London, conducted by Martyn Brabbins, at St. Giles Cripplegate, March 1994.

After the Eulogy for Violin and Piano (c.14’). ^* Written for Ann Hooley. Winner of both jury and critics prizes at the 2002 UK/Eire composition competition. First performance, 27 November 2002, Purcell Room, by Adam Summerhayes and Alan Brown.

1994

Sonata for Violin, Viola and Piano (c. 22’). ^* Written for Ann Hooley, Bridget Carey and Dominic Saunders and premiered by them at St Giles Cripplegate in February 1996, this piece was awarded the 1994 Clements Memorial Prize for Chamber Composition.

1992

Vaela for Solo Viola (c. 11’). Commissioned by the Exeter Festival with funds provided by South West Arts and premi貥d at the Northcott Theatre in August 1992 by Bridget Carey, who subsequently gave the first London performance at the BMIC, February 1993.

String Quartet (c. 17’). Premiered by the Kreutzer Quartet, Cyprus, March 1998.

1989

Dialogues pour violon et piano (c. 10’) ^* Commissioned by Paule Barsalou and premiered by her at the Cleveland Institute of Music in March 1989. Canadian premiere by the Barsalou/Gee Duo, Hamilton, Ontario, October 1992. The Dialogues were given their first British performance by Ann Hooley and William Hancox at a BMIC concert in February 1993.

Clarinet trio (13’ 30"). Cl, Vc, Pf Commissioned by Frances Williams for Music at Leasowes Bank Festival 2003, and first performed there on 1 August 2003 by Neriye Ashworth, Christopher Allan and Mark Troop.

The Cathedral. Trio for Alto Flute, Bass Clarinet and Piano (7’45") Afl, Bcl, Pf Written for Carla Rees and first performed on 29 October 2004 at St Cyprian’s, London NW1 by Carla Rees, Sarah Thurlow and Kerry Yong.
