Mathias Spahlinger is a German composer. His work on the field of tension between the diverse musical influences and styles ranging from Renaissance to jazz, between musique concrète and Webern-like minimalism, between the noise, improvisation and notation, between aesthetic autonomy and political awareness, the works Spahlinger conflicts for which there is no such models are established.
His father was a cellist. He advised him in 1951 to play violin, recorder, and then cello. In 1952 he received piano lessons. In 1959 he began an intensive interest in the Jazz, took saxophone lessons and wanted to be a jazz musician. In 1962, he left the school and made a typesetter teaching. Meanwhile, he took private lessons in composition with Konrad Lechner. When teaching, he continued his studies with Lechner at the Academy of Music in Darmstadt afterwards. In 1968, he taught at the Stuttgart School of Music for piano, theory, early music and experimental music. From 1973 to 1977 he studied composition with Erhard Karkoschka at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart. In 1978 he was guest lecturer in music theory at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, in 1984 professor of composition and music theory at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. Since 1990 he has been Professor of Composition and Director of the Institute for New Music at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg.
