(Salamanca: Francisco de Cea Tesa, 1613)
[large collection in one book -- includes his 2nd book of masses,
settings of psalms and hymns for Vespers and Compline, and some miscellaneous
liturgical pieces] - **A third publication from 1623, containing psalms, motets, and instrumental
arrangements has not yet been located. I discovered its existence
in a history of the Ciudad Rodrigo Cathedral manuscript.
Juan Esquivel was born and educated in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain. His primary
teacher was Juan Navarro (ca. 1530-80), but his style shows influence of
Morales and Guerrero. Esquivel served as maestro de capilla in the
Spanish cities of Oviedo and Calahorra before returning to Ciudad Rodrigo
to serve that cathedral. There is evidence that the prestigious cathedral
of Burgos sought his services, but he never auditioned for the position.
He was one of the most published Spanish composers of the early 17th century.
His music reveals a preference for experimentation with non-cadential
chromaticism and unconventional voice leading.
