Napoli is the place of composers Francesco Feo (*1691–†1761), Giovanni Paisiello (†1816), Nicola Porpora (*1686–†1768), Fr. Provenzale (*1626–†1704), and Ruggiero Leoncavallo (*1858).

Music education in four “conservatories” (orphanages), of which the Pietà dei Turchini developed into the actual Conservatorio. They were instrumental in the rise of the so-called Neapolitan School of opera, esp. opera buffa, which reached its climax in the first half of the 18th c.
Great singing tradition: from popular canzonette Napolitane to Farinelli and Caruso.
