Ducal court since 1675 - in the 17th c. Joh. Ludwig (72) and Nicolaus Ephraim (73) Bach - musical life reached its peak from 1862 until 1914 under the theatre and music loving duke Georg II, with whom Brahms was befriended. Hans von Bülow and Max Reger. Under Bülow’s baton the court orchestra became world famous; Richard Strauss was engaged as his assistant and successor, but he stayed only one season (1885-86).
