Frederick May was a student at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he was awarded 7 scholarships, and also studied at the Royal Academy of music under Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. He achieved his Batchelor of Music degree at Trinity College, Dublin and then studied in Vienna until 1936.
