His full name is Perotinus Magister, also known as Magister Perotinus or Perotinus Magnus but most refer to him simply as Perotin. He was a French composer of the Medieval Period, one of the few composers of that time whose name has been recorded in history.
Type of Compositions:
Perotin wrote organum, an early form of counterpoint, and sacred music in the Ars Antiqua style. He was also one of the first composers to use polyphony in his compositions and is said to have influenced the development of the motet.
Influence:
He is believed to have studied with Leonin, both are said to be members of the Parisian School or the Notre Dame School. Perotin edited the Magnus Liber Organi a collection of organum by Leonin.
