Today Mouquet is best known for "La Flûte de Pan" for flute and orchestra, and
for an arrangement of it, the Sonata for flute and piano, Op. 15.
During the sonata’s three movements, the cloven-hoofed Pan, the Greek
god of sheperds and their flocks, is heard playing his flute in amorous serenades and lively
Jules Mouquet (1867-1946) studied composition with Theodore Dubois at
the Paris Conservatory and joined its faculty in 1913 as a professor
of harmony. Like Debussy and many other French composers at the turn of the
century, Mouquet favored subjects from Greek mythology, as a sort of
neoclassical reaction against the fervent treatments of Norse legend in Wagner’s operas.
This figures prominently in his compositions.
