MacDowell’s second piano concerto and his Indian Suite are his best known works. He was founder — with his wife — of the world famous MacDowell colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, an artists’ retreat. Peterborough was model for the famous American play “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder, who wrote the play at the colony. Many other composers, playwrights, painters, writers, and poets stayed there.
