Karel Berman’s works include a suite for piano called Terezin, and Poupata, a song cycle for bass and piano.
Karel Berman arrived in the Terezin concentration camp in 1943, when musical life were in ‘full swing’. Despite his youth he already had a lot of experience as a singer, conductor and composer, and so was able to plunge into the musical life in Terezin with ease and participate in many performances. After the war, Berman completed his studies at the Prague conservatory, majoring in voice and stage direction. He retired from from his work in several opera houses in Czechoslovakia in 1991, and as a professor at the Academy of Music in Prague brought up many exellent young singers.
