Haiku for orchestra

concert
Friday, May 11, 2012 - 20:30 to 22:00
Composer reference:

Haiku is based on the first movement of Chiaroscuri for violin and piano commissioned by the South African Music Guild in 1987.

The essence of Haiku is the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a punctuation mark that indicates a separation and colors the manner in which the juxtaposed elements are related (ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku).

This is represented in the composition by a brief pause of silence in a melodic phrase, pizzicati, the appearance of a rhythmical short sentence and the structural usage of pentatonic melodies and jazz harmonies.

The string section introduces portions of the melodic phrases that will be developed by the woodwind and brass sections. The distance between phrases is progressively reduced up until the solo trumpet phrase that signals the beginning of the final section where the phrases are performed together.
