Igor Stravinsky

Over a century ago, in 1908, Igor Stravinsky composed a piece in memory of the then recently deceased Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who had been his teacher. The 12 minute orchestral composition, called Pogrebal’naya Pesnya (Funeral Song) was performed only once, and since then considered to be lost.

When clearing out the rooms of the St Petersburg Conservatoire in preparation for an overhaul, the orchestral parts were found back in a hidden pile of manuscripts. Librarian Natalya Braginskaya, a Russian Stravinsky specialist, recognized the importance of the find, and presented the discovery on a Stravinsky conference of the International Musicological Society in St Petersburg on 4 September.
