The 2009 Pulitzer Prize for music was won by Steve Reich for his composition “Double Sextet”, premiered in Richmond, VA, on 26 March 2008.

The jury describes the composition as “a major work that displays an ability to channel an initial burst of energy into a large-scale musical event, built with masterful control and consistently intriguing to the ear.”

The award is given for a distinguished musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the year. The prize comes with a sum of $10,000.
