The definitive waltz king of Mexico, he had an enviable command of melody and a keen appreciation of harmony and rhythm which he put to good use in his works. The best known of his may walzes is Sobre los olas (On the Waves), which has often been attributed to Johann Strauss II, and perptuated by the European mistake of including this work in concert of Viennese music in the Old World. However, it is likely that Strauss himself would like to have composed this waltz.
