His father Vasili Grigorovich Sviridov, telegraph operator, died in 1919 and his mother, Elizaveta Ivanovna, in 1937.
The family moved to Kursk in 1924 where Georigi Vasilievich entered elementary school and also piano class of Kursk Music School. Before graduation in 1932, he began to compose and made some studies.
After graduation, he moved to Leningrad (St. Petersburg), learned piano and composition at the Central Musical College (of Leningrad Tekhnika?) from 1932 to 1936, then went to Leningrad Conservatoire: Firstly in P. Ryazanov’s class for a year or less, secondly in D. Shostakovich’s class from 1937 to 1941.
Not later than 1937 (1936?) he became a member of the Union of Soviet Composers.
Survived the World War II through military service and evacuation, Sviridov returned to Leningrad in 1944 and was appointed musical director of Leningrad Academic Theater of Drama and Comedy. Since 1956 he had lived in Moscow and died there. Awarded so may prizes and received honors.
