Since the middle ages a free town of citizens, fairs (Buchmesse!) and coronations; on the occasion of the latter Lassus (1562), Hassler (1612 - he died during the festivities) and Salieri and Mozart (1790) appeared; Mozart had already stayed here in August 1763. In the former Barfüsserkirche worked Joh. Andreas Herbst (1623-36, 1644-†1666) and Telemann (1712-21). Mendelssohn married in Frankfurt Cécile Jeanrenaud (1837).

Yearly Musikmesse (music fair) in October.
