Victor Herbert was an Irish cello player and composer. He studied at the Stuttgart conservatory, where he started as cello player at the opera orchestra. In 1886 he went to the Thomas Orchestra in New York. Herbert was conductor in Pittsburgh from 1898 till 1904, and later from his own orchestra in New York. He became very well known in the US as a composer of operettas.
