MusicAtlas: Kassel

Music fostered by landgrave Moritz der Gelehrte: John Dowland 1594-95 and Heinrich Schütz 1599-1615 (incl. four years of study in Italy on the landgrave's expense) - erection of Ottoneum (>01) - three famous organs by Scherer (1610-14); on the occasion of their renovation in 1722 Bach visited Kassel as organ examiner. Later Eberlin, Fiorillo, Reichardt, Spohr and Mahler.

After war-damage drastic renovation of the town; all composer houses lost.
